Q&A WITH HELEN H. DURRANT

WHAT EDITOR KATE LYALL GRANT SAYS ABOUT
THE RAVENSWOOD MURDERS

I know you’ll come and when you do I want things to be simple. It won’t be easy. I won’t be here to tell you what happened. I’ll be dead, lifeless in a cold grave. That is why I plan to leave what few clues I can for you to find and act upon.

‘From the opening paragraph, I was completely hooked by this tense and twisting tale of the brutal murders of four young women, their bodies sewn into white shrouds and buried in the woods. As a seasoned mystery reader, it’s rare for me to come across an author who truly surprises me, but Helen H. Durrant is the master of the unexpected twist — and in The Ravenswood Murders, she delivers a couple of truly shocking revelations which took my breath away.’

Q&A WITH HELEN H. DURRANT

What are you currently reading?

The White Queen
by Philippa Gregory. I love historical novels, they’re a nice change from the stuff I write about.

What do you think is the perfect way to dispose of a body?

Put the body in a tank of concrete — when it’s set dispose of it at sea. Alternatively, build the block of concrete into the foundations of a building that is in the process of being built.

Can you tell us an interesting fact about Detective Alice Rossi we don’t know yet?

She collects porcelain animals — birds mostly. Her favourite being a china model of a large magpie. This is a hobby started in childhood when her granny gave her two models of goldfinches — old and with beautiful detail and had belonged to her great grandmother. Dilys takes great care when dusting them.

Which character did you have the most fun writing?

Mad Hatter from book one — The Ash Lake Murders. I wanted to call the main character Alice so Mad Hatter fitted nicely.

How do you celebrate on publication day?

A variety of things from a drink at home to going out for a meal with the family. I don’t do going ‘wild’, I’ve written too many books for that. And of course there is the wonderful party that Jill organises — a number of authors go to these and we get the chance to chat. All online I should say.
