STORY BEHIND THE BOOK WITH DANIEL SELLERS

When did you first have the idea for your Detective Lola Harris Mysteries?

I was having my hair cut and my hairdresser told me that clients often confide their deepest secrets in their stylist. I thought — what fantastic training hairdressing must be for a detective. You learn how to ask questions with empathy — and to get all the gossip. Both Lola and I have a really keen sense of gossip. We can’t resist secrets.

Which book in the series have you enjoyed writing the most?

Murder on the Clyde was a challenge because it’s about a current investigation and a cold case, so it was complex to plot, but it was huge fun writing. I LOVED writing the scenes where Lola gives a well-deserved dressing down to a couple of particularly vile individuals. Lola is on fire in this one.

Tell us more about the Glasgow setting. Why did you choose to set the series here, and do you have any pictures?

I love writing about Glasgow. The people are great but the city can be wild on a weekend, or when there’s a big football game on. I really wanted to write about the river, which is why the city exists. The wind cuts through you down there, and you meet all types — though hopefully not a serial murderer!

I don’t live in Glasgow any more, but in Argyll, by the sea and near the mountains, so I feel like a country bumpkin whenever I go into the city. I love writing in local cafés. Here’s a (slightly posed) photo of me writing at the Perch Café in Garelochhead, with my muse Rasmus, who enjoys the Perch’s gravy bone biscuits as much as I enjoy their food!

How do you want readers to feel when they've finished Murder on the Clyde?

Thrilled, satisfied and full of admiration for Lola, who is an avenging angel in this story. I also want readers to consider spending a weekend in Glasgow. It’s really very safe and you can have a fantastic night out.
